10 Witchy Things to Do in October for Autumn Magick and Samhain Rituals

October is one of the most powerful months for witches and spiritual seekers. The veil is said to be thinnest, making this the perfect time for Samhain rituals, ancestor work, protection spells, and autumn witchcraft practices. Whether you’re new to the craft or deepening your path, October offers endless opportunities to connect with the season’s energy. From simple daily practices to meaningful rituals, here are 10 witchy things to do in October to bring more magick into your life.

1. Celebrate Samhain, the Witch’s New Year

Samhain (October 31) marks the turning of the Wheel of the Year into its darkest phase. It’s a time for endings, reflection, and new beginnings. Spiritually, this is when we pause to honor ancestors, release what no longer serves us, and step into the mysteries of the new cycle.

One year, I celebrated by lighting a single black candle and writing a short letter to my grandmother. It wasn’t fancy, but the connection I felt was real. That’s the beauty of Samhain; it meets you where you are.

2. Create an Ancestor Offering

Ancestor work doesn’t have to be complicated. A plate of food, a cup of tea, or even a single candle offered with love can be a powerful gesture. If you’re more private, you can simply whisper their names before bed or place a photo on your nightstand.

3. Try a Release Ritual

The falling leaves remind us to let go. Write down what you’re ready to release (fear, stress, old habits, etc.) and burn the paper safely, bury it, or let the wind carry it away.

I once scribbled a single word "doubt" onto a leaf and tossed it into the ocean. Watching it float away with the tide felt like a weight lifting off my chest.

4. Take a Twilight Walk

There’s something about October evenings: the crisp air (or, here in Florida, less wet air), the glow of jack-o’-lanterns, the scent of woodsmoke. Twilight walks are one of my favorite ways to slip into a meditative state while connecting with the season. Notice the sounds, the smells, and the shift in the air. It’s all magick!

5. Craft a Protection Spell

With the veil thinner, October is a natural time to focus on protection. Make a charm bag with herbs like rosemary or sage, add a pinch of salt, and tuck it near your doorway. Black tourmaline or obsidian placed on windowsills can also help keep heavy energy at bay.

I still have the obsidian points in my windowsills that I placed when we moved in 10 years ago. They get cleansed and charged regularly, but other than that, they stay there year-round.

6. Decorate Your Altar for Samhain

Even if you don’t have a full altar, swapping out seasonal elements can shift the energy of your space. Add pumpkins, apples, dark candles, or a handful of colorful leaves. If you’re limited on space, even one candle or a small bowl of acorns can anchor your practice.

7. Bake Something Spooky (or Seasonal)

Kitchen witchery is at its coziest in October. Bake pumpkin bread, simmer mulled cider, or roast butternut squash with herbs (yum!). Stir clockwise for abundance, counterclockwise for release. My personal favorite? Apple crisp with cinnamon; it feels like autumn in every bite.

8. Journal with October Energy

Use the season as inspiration for reflection. A few prompts:

  • What am I ready to release this year?
  • Which ancestors or guides do I want to draw closer?
  • What intentions am I planting for the new cycle?

Even if journaling isn’t your thing, doodling or meditating on these questions can open the door to insight.

9. Watch the Moon Phases

October’s full moon is often called the Hunter’s Moon. The waxing and waning cycles carry potent energy for spells and reflection this month! Use the waxing moon for setting intentions and the waning moon for clearing and release.

I love sitting outside with a blanket (a very light blanket, and really, it's more a protection against mosquitos than warmth) and just watching the moonrise. It’s a simple ritual, but deeply grounding.

10. Lean on a Little Extra Support

If you’d like ready-to-go rituals and handmade tools, I created Samhain Kits this year. There are three levels of ritual essentials, and each one includes thoughtful pieces and sample rituals designed to help you connect with the season without stress. They’re perfect if you’re short on time or simply want guidance you can trust.

Final Thoughts

October moves quickly, and before you know it, Samhain will be here. Take time to enjoy the little things: a candle at dusk, a walk among the leaves, a whispered thank-you to your ancestors. However you celebrate, trust that your magick is enough.

Stay mystical, Friends!
